WhatsApp Multi Linked Devices

The features of the previously popular WhatsApp communication application WhatsApp Web are very popular and help them carry out their daily activities, especially for those who are lazy 😄 use email to communicate. Yep, with the web version of WhatsApp, it makes it easy for users to share documents, photos and other media spontaneously, while still being able to communicate via chat, voice or video calls. However, while using WhatsApp Web, your device must remain connected to the internet, meaning that if your mobile data quota runs out or your device is offline, the WhatsApp Web service will immediately stop.

Not long ago WhatsApp introduced a multi-device feature that allows you to use the same WhatsApp account on up to four devices without having to be online at the same time, meaning that with this feature you can carry out smoother communication scenarios without any interruptions if your device is offline.

For example, you have a personal cell phone, a laptop for office work, a PC for games and a tablet if you are traveling. The WhatsApp application can be installed on the four devices, then register with your account. WhatsApp can run as usual without having to online all your devices, and if you switch devices depending on the situation and needs, your WhatsApp communication will not be interrupted.

This feature is still in the beta stage to activate and see which devices your WhatsApp account is active on, you just have to access the “three vertical dots” menu located at the top right of the WhatsApp application then click Linked Devices.

Even though the feature is still in beta, you can try it on the stable release of WhatsApp, at least the one I use is version 2.21.

WhatsApp’s official website mentions this opt-in program which gives you early access to try the new version of WhatsApp for Web, Desktop and Portal. If you join the multi-device beta, you will be able to use the linked companion device without needing to keep your phone connected (online). Your private messages, media and calls remain end-to-end (end-to-end).

Here’s an explanation of the rules, you can use WhatsApp on up to four companion devices at once, but can only connect one phone to your WhatsApp account at a time. You still need to register your WhatsApp account and link the new device with your phone. If you don’t use your phone for more than 14 days, your linked device will be disconnected.

Two groups of users can enjoy the current multi-device feature:

  • All Beta Users: WhatsApp Beta and WhatsApp Business Beta
  • WhatsApp Business and WhatsApp Business users are not beta in some countries

These features are not currently supported in this multi-device beta:

  • View live location on companion devices.
  • Pin chats on WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
  • Join, view and rearrange group invites from WhatsApp Web and Desktop. You should use your phone instead.
  • Sending messages or calling someone who is using an old version of WhatsApp on their phone will not work from your linked device.
  • Call from Portal or WhatsApp Desktop to linked devices that are not listed in the multi-device beta.
  • Other WhatsApp accounts on your Portal will not work unless they have joined the multi-device beta.
  • WhatsApp Business users cannot edit their business name or label from WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
